The current state sales tax rate in New York (NY) is 4%. The total tax rate might be as high as 8.875 percent depending on local governments. Other, local-level tax rates in New York are relatively complex when compared to other states’ local-level tax rates. The municipal, county, school, transit, and SPD (special purpose district) levels may all levy a sales tax in New York. Any remote marketplace provider who made or facilitated more than $500,000 in gross sales and 100 transactions in New York state in the previous four quarterly periods must obtain a certificate of authority, collect sales tax, file returns, and remit tax on all sales into the state beginning June 1, 2019. Anyone selling taxable tangible personal property or services in a retail setting must register with the New York Tax Department at least 20 days before the transaction.
