Virginia Sales Tax

The current state sales tax rate in Virginia (VA) is 4.3 percent. The total tax rate might be as high as 7% depending on local governments. In Virginia, there is a tax on the retail sale, lease, or rental of tangible personal property, as well as the use or consumption of tangible personal property. Sales and use tax applies to a wide range of services. Marketplace facilitators who have more than $100,000 in gross revenue or 200 or more transactions in the commonwealth and contract with a marketplace seller to facilitate the sale of their products in Virginia through a physical or electronic marketplace such as Amazon or Etsy must collect and remit sales and use tax on all marketplace transactions. All Virginia sales conducted through the marketplace, both its own and third-party sales, are included in the threshold. A marketplace vendor who already has nexus with Virginia or creates economic nexus after July 1, 2019, may request a waiver from the collection requirement from the marketplace facilitator.
